The right lane of State Route 900 near Interstate 405 in the Highlands was closed for a time Monday and Tuesday for repairs to a pothole-like depression that had opened in the road.

The damage occurred in stretch of westbound SR 900 near Sunset Boulevard Northeast where the state Department of Transportation has been replacing aging and failing pipes in the storm system.

An initial report of the damage was made to the City of Renton by a motorist who felt the dip in the roadway, according to Broch Bender, a spokeswoman for the transportation department.

City crews made an initial repair, according to Bender.

The westbound lanes take motorists to north Renton.

The state project included plugging up old pipes and then placing new ones, according to Bender. Shorter pipes, called underdrain pipes that collect stormwater, couldn’t be filled, she said, and were left in place under a new pavement overlay.

However, a 50-ton roller that compressed the pavement caused enough vibrations to damage the short pipes, which in essence collapsed, causing the depression, according to Bender.
