Department of Ecology updates algae permit

The state Department of Ecology has updated a permit that allows the use of products to control aquatic plants and algae in fresh waters.

Licensed applicators and other authorized entities must have coverage by the Aquatic Plant and Algae Management General Permit before they can treat plants and algae in fresh waters. The permit also allows treatment of nuisance emergent plants along roadsides and ditch banks.

Changes in the permit reflect feedback Ecology received from businesses that treat plants and algae, from waterfront residents, and from state and local governments.

Some of the changes include:

• Increased the notification to waterfront residents.

• Increased protections to fish, wildlife, sensitive habitats, and waterfowl nesting areas.

The permit is posted on Ecology’s website at www.ecy.wa.gov.

The final permit goes into effect March 18.
