The general election is over but there’s still one matter – removing all those political signs.

Political signs within Renton city limits need to be removed within 14 days following the Nov. 6 general election, so Nov. 20 is the deadline, under City of Renton ordinance.

Failure to remove a sign that’s still standing on Nov. 21 could result in a $100 fine and loss of the sign. The total fine for all signs that violate the ordinance is capped at $10,000.

The regulation applies to political signs in the public right-of-ways and on private property.

The Washington state Department of Transportation also has a deadline to remove political signs.

Political signs are outright banned in state highway right-of-ways. A political sign on private property that’s visible from a state highway must be removed 10 days after the election. That 10-day period ends on Nov. 16.

State highways that run through Renton include State Routes 169, 167, 900 and Interstate 405.

Failure to remove the sign is a misdemeanor.

Alice Fiman, a transportation department spokeswoman, said the state works with candidates to educate them about the proper placement of political signs. Maintenance workers remove signs from rights of way, she said, and the state could contact owners of private property if a visible sign is reported.
