Chlorine leak causes road closure, no injuries

A chlorine leak Tuesday morning from the the Liberty Well on Houser Way near Liberty Park closed a stretch of Houser Way for about an hour.

No one was injured or harmed by the leak.

Mark Peterson, deputy chief of response operations for Renton Fire and Emergency Services, says the leak occurred at about 10 a.m., when a worker was replacing a chlorine cylinder in the facility, which supplies part of Renton’s drinking water. As he was putting on the new cylinder, the worker smelled chlorine.

Renton Fire and Emergency Services’ Technical Response Team then arrived and sealed the leak, which came from a faulty valve on the old cylinder the worker replaced. The team then left the building to air out.

The Liberty Well was put back in use when the chlorine levels went down to an acceptable level.

Less than three pounds of chlorine was lost in the leak, Peterson says.

The faulty cylinder will be repaired before it is used again, he adds.
