‘Breakathon’ earns $16,000 for Communities in Schools

For the fifth year in a row, martial artists in bright orange shirts marched to Liberty Park and broke boards at Renton River Days' Kids Fair to raise the money.

Leaders from Kim’s Tae Kwon Do, Ms. Mari’s Martial Arts Club, and Lee’s Martial Arts Renton/Maple Valley this past week turned in more than $16,000 to Communities in Schools of Renton Executive Director Sue Paro.

For the fifth year in a row, martial artists in bright orange shirts marched to Liberty Park and broke boards at Renton River Days’ Kids Fair to raise the money.

This is the biggest fundraiser the schools participate in, and they give 100 percent of the money away to help keep Renton youth in school.

This year, students made a small detour and marched past the Salvation Army’s booth to drop off their non-perishable food donations for the “Feed the People, not the Ducks” campaign.

As always, martial arts instructors hope to instill the message that “we always give more than we take” in an effort to better our communities.

Last year’s “breakathon” gained the martial artists local recognition as they were featured in a documentary that aired on Public Access TV. In addition, they were highlighted in a feature article in Martial Arts Success Magazine, a national publication
