Big Brothers, Sisters looking for mentors in the Renton area

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound is looking for mentors in the Renton area, particularly male mentors.

The group has just launched their “Ask-a-Man Campaign,” in which they are asking people to ask the men in their lives to consider being a Big Brother.

According to the company, which is the largest mentoring organization in Washington State, only 3 out of every 10 inquiries to volunteer come from men.

Meanwhile there are over 300 boys on their waiting list, many of whom wait an average of two years to be matched with a Big Brother. Also, a disproportionate number of the children the organization serves are African-American and Latino boys. So, they are especially looking for mentors who fit that description.

The organization helps children build the attitudes and behaviors needed to stay in school, succeed academically, make healthy choices and create promising futures.

Big Brothers Big Sisters finds that having the positive influence of a Big Brother makes a real difference in a boy’s life.

Big Brothers Big Sisters has resources such as e-cards, flyers and postcards that prompt the asking.
