Three Hazen High School graduates, all Eagle Scouts bound for Utah’s Brigham Young University, were awarded $6,000 in scholarships last week.

Though the Kennydale Lions Club scholarships come with few restrictions, few students apply for them each year.

“Students don’t seem to realize how many scholarships are available,” said Carolyn Wold, the club’s zone chairman.

Only five students applied this year, but it was an improvement from two years ago, when no one applied, said scholarship chairman Mary Schott.

Most scholarships available to students are offered to those seeking specific careers or who are of a certain ethnicity, Wold said.

“The only thing we’re asking is that the student be making progress toward the degree and not to be on academic probation,” she said.

The three students received the awards at a regular Lions meeting, but family members for whom the awards were named for came to show their support.

“There are three Lion’s clubs in Renton, and a lot of people know about the other ones, but they don’t know about us,” Schott said.

This fall, the club also plans to award $1,000 to Running Start students, Wold said.

Winners

• Justin Jacobs won the Milt Fiene Memorial Scholarship, $4,000 over four years.

Jacobs, an Eagle Scout, was a member of the varsity baseball and basketball teams at Hazen High School, and he won the U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar-Athlete Award.

His honors include 3.9 GPA, four years from the National Honors Society, the Washington State Honors Award and the Hazen Award of Excellence Academic Top 10.

He has volunteered at Northwest Harvest, Peace for the Streets and the Bishop’s Storehouse. He also collected and repaired about 52 bicycles to be shipped to Ghana.

• Adriel Johnson won the Lewis Purcell Memorial Scholarship of $1,000. An Eagle Scout, Johnson was a varsity member of Hazen’s cross-country and track teams.

His honors include a 3.9 GPA, the National Honor Society, Renton Rotary Youth of the Month and Hazen Award of Excellence Academic Top 10. He also graduated from Japanese High School alongside Hazen.

• David Hinkley won the William G. Snyder Memorial Scholarship of $1,000. An Eagle Scout, he was a member of Hazen’s varsity cross-country and track,

His honors include a 3.8 GPA, two years on National Honor Society and Hazen High School Outstanding Senior Award.

He’s volunteered with Relay for Life, Northwest Harvest, Bishop’s Storehouse and as a volunteer project, he spent 76 and a half hours painting over graffiti.
