27-year-old killed when Escort goes airborne, crashes into wall on Sunset

A 27-year-old man early died Wednesday morning when the car he was driving – apparently at a high rate of speed – left Sunset Boulevard Southwest, went airborne and crashed into a cement wall, according to Renton police.

The man’s name wasn’t immediately available from the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.

A Renton police officer spotted the man’s car off the roadway at about 2:45 a.m., according to Penny Bartley, a spokeswoman for the Renton Police Department.

Upon investigation, the officer found that the man had been ejected from the 1998 Ford Escort station wagon. The man died at the scene.

The vehicle drove into a drainage ditch, became airborne, landing several feet away. The Escort struck a landscaping wall, then flipped, according to Bartley.

“Certainly, speed was a factor,” said Bartley.

It’s uncertain when the accident occurred, according to Bartley. However, Sunset is busy even at that time of the day and it’s assumed someone would have reported the accident fairly quickly, she said.
