Cooking up delicious ideas to keep your annual events happening safely!

Fundraisers and special events ARE still possible thanks to this innovative team

Faced with the implications of COVID-19, the Federal Way Kiwanis had a serious decision to make: Do they cancel their 64th annual Salmon Bake fundraiser or find a safe way to celebrate?

Luckily, John and Amy Hatcher had the answer: A succulent salmon dinner, prepared and served following all CDC and King County Department of Health safe food service guidelines, and picked up curbside by appreciative diners and supporters.

“Kiwanis had never canceled in their 64-year history and this year would be no exception,” says Amy, who with John has delighted diners with their Café Pacific Restaurant and now Catering business for over 30 years. “Yes, it was different from the usual event, but we catered the sold-out Salmon Bake to rave reviews and a better-than-expected fundraiser. The Kiwanis enjoyed connecting with and thanking their supporters from a safe distance. Along with music playing, the mouthwatering aroma of Maple Rub salmon and the high energy of our team and the Kiwanis volunteers made for a great event!”

The salmon bake was just one way Café Pacific is helping local organizations, businesses, and non-profits pivot in the COVID era.

Working with Seattle Christian School for their 20th annual fundraiser, the Café Pacific team created a special barbecue meal for four that participants picked-up from the school before the final evening of a virtual auction. The school auction committee connected with supporters, thanked them for their contributions, and created a celebratory atmosphere before guests left to enjoy their meals at home where they logged online to learn if they were successful auction bidders.

“They were extremely pleased by how well they did,” Amy says.

“It’s really crucial for many of these organizations to keep these events going, whether it’s a non-profit fundraiser or a business thanking valued suppliers, staff or customers – especially during these challenging times,” she notes. “You really lose momentum if you cancel it for a year.”

In the case of the Multi-Service Center’s Crab Feed guests picked up directly from Café Pacific’s kitchen and then could go enjoy their dinner at home or picnic at a favorite location. Some non-profits add a dollar amount to the price of the meal which is another fundraising opportunity.

“It’s still fun, it gets people out of the house in a safe way, and it lets them support a cause or organization that’s important to them,” Amy says.

“With the quality and care we put into all our food, the meals are delicious, and organizations are so grateful to have an option,” Amy says.
