Another Woman’s Face

Pitched midway between soap opera and surreal camp, “Another Woman’s Face” is a candy-colored satire on the beauty industry in the poisoned bonbon tradition of John Waters and Pedro Almodóvar. Aptly named Bella (Laura Chiatti) hosts a television show broadcast from her husband René’s (Alessandro Preziosi) plastic surgery center in the Alps, on which viewers can watch his patients stumble about as heavily bandaged as horror-movie mummies. When ratings fall and research indicates audiences have grown tired of Bella’s face, she’s fired; which sends her storming out in a rage, and directly into a traffic accident involving the clinic’s maintenance man (Lino Guanciale) and an errant toilet bowl. Though she’s only mildly injured, the greedy René sniffs out an opportunity for a much greater payday, so long as the insurance company (and the ever-fickle, beauty-chasing public) can be convinced Bella has been horribly disfigured, and in need of his miraculous attentions. Promises to unveil Bella’s new face on their own show lead to the expected media circus; meanwhile, an asteroid named Tony is on a collision course with Earth.
