Between his first bout with Sonny Liston and his memorable fights with Joe Frazier and George Foreman, heavyweight champion boxer Muhammad Ali had to fight the toughest and longest battle of his life in defense of his personal and political beliefs. Ali, née Cassius Clay, had officially aligned himself with the Nation of Islam in 1964 soon after winning his first heavyweight champion title against Liston and taken on the now iconic name given to him by leader Elijah Muhammad. When he refused to serve in the Vietnam War a few years later, Muhammad Ali became the fighter who wouldn’t fight for America. From Cassius Clay to Cassius X and on to Muhammad Ali, from a charismatic celebrity recruit of Malcolm X to an outspoken icon of anti-war social activism, the identity of Ali is intricately tied to the Nation of Islam and to social justice. The Trials of Muhammad Ali masterfully pieces together famous footage and previously unseen material with insight from those closest to him. It sheds light on a formative period in Ali’s life as he fought racial prejudice, and the American legal system, to ultimately find his way back into the ring. Director: Bill Siegel.
