Studio East continues sensory friendly shows with ‘Rapunzel’

The show aims to provide a safe place for children with special needs to enjoy theatre.

The StoryBook Theater, in partnership with Safeco Insurance Fund, is working to make theater accessible for children with developmental challenges and special needs.

Local community members with experience in these areas are working with Studio East to make StoryBook Theater a safe and welcoming place for children with sensory differences and other disabilities.

Studio East offered its first sensory-friendly productions of Pinocchio on Jan. 27 at Renton Carco Theatre and Feb. 4 at the Kirkland Performance Center. Studio East is continuing the sensory-friendly shows with Rapunzel in April and May. Studio East invites locals to bring your whole family to see the play for just $5 per person.

In order to adapt our musicals to be sensory-friendly, Studio East plan to leave the house lights up a few levels higher than for a standard production, reduce the sound level, as well as offer a “quiet space” for children who may need a break from what may be overwhelming sensory input for them.

Friendly, supportive staff and community volunteers will minimize stress and offer whatever help attendees may need to facilitate the theater experience.
