As part of their commitment to education, and to celebrate teachers in the Renton School District, each month members of Rotary Club of Renton selects a few teachers as Teacher of the Month.
As part of the recognition, teachers attend Rotary’s Teacher of the Month recognition luncheon held at the Maplewood Golf Course. Each teacher is introduced, makes a brief comment about the school and classroom and receives $200 to be used for classroom supplies or instructional materials.
December’s Teachers of the Month are:
Lauren Asberg
Third Grade Teacher at Sierra Heights Elementary School
Lauren Asberg started her college experience at Seattle Pacific University where she earned a degree in integrated studies (elementary education with a math concentration). While in college, Asberg tutored elementary and high school students and spent a summer teaching English in Vietnam. She is also involved in teaching children and youth at Eastridge Baptist Church in Kent. Asberg has been teaching in Renton for four years.
Jonah Carpenter
Special Education Teacher at Renton Academy
Jonah Carpenter attended Central Washington University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in sociology. He continued his education at the University of Washington where he earned a masters in education. Before teaching, Carpenter worked with youth in crisis, transition and treatment in various treatment and support settings. He taught special education in Portland, Oregon for three years before joining the Renton team. This year is Carpenter’s third year teaching in the Renton School District.
Teresa Hundelt
Special Education/Language Arts Teacher at Risdon Middle School
Teresa Hundelt studied K-8 elementary education and P-12 special education at City University. Before becoming a teacher, Teresa worked as a surgical scrub technician, and a systems analyst at Overlake Hospital. While she obtained her degree, she worked as a paraeducator for McKnight Middle School’s ILC Program. This is Hundelt’s sixth year of teaching for the Renton School District.
