Renton artist to compete in Pacific West Quilt Show

It took 1900s Viennese painter Gustav Klimt three years to paint the “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I” and Barbara Reed of Renton about four months to do an interpretation of the masterpiece in a quilt.

“I call it ‘My Daughter’s Challenge’ because she challenged me to make it into a quilt,” said Reed.

She used appliqué, stenciling and painting techniques to turn the 1907 painting into a softer version of one of her daughter’s favorite painter’s most famous pieces.

Reed had to draw the face and mimic Klimt’s paint strokes in fabric.

Her effort landed her a finalist slot in the Pacific West Quilt Show presented Aug. 26-28 at the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center.

Reed’s quilt will compete with 227 quilts and wearable art entries from 18 U.S. states and Canadian provinces of the Pacific West region.

More than $25,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded to winners in 10 categories.

Reed has always sewed but started quilting 28 years ago when she had more time to devote to it. She said of her quilt for the show, “It really got me going, I got really intrigued with trying to get it right.”

Quilting brings her a relaxing challenge and keeps her out of trouble, she said.

This is the first time she’s been in a juried quilt show.

The Tacoma show is organized by the non-profit Association of Pacific West Quilters (APWQ). The organization hopes to make the show an annual event.

“We are extremely pleased with the very high standard of the quilts being created in traditional and innovative styles,” said Peggy Sperry, APWQ president in a release. “From a field of more than 430 entries, 227 were selected.”

The show is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
