Police offer free disposal of unwanted and expired medicines

Secure kiosk on first floor of city hall accessible during business hours

City of Renton residents now have a secure method to dispose of unwanted and expired medicines present in their homes. The Renton Police Department has installed a kiosk designed to dispose of such medicines in their lobby on the first floor of City Hall.

“Leftover medications, especially those containing opioids, are a potential hazard for everyone and I hope residents will take advantage of this program,” Renton Mayor Denis Law said in a press release. “Studies have shown there’s a direct link between abuse of over-the-counter opioids and our nation’s heroin problem.”

The kiosk is located in the police department’s information office on the first floor lobby of city hall, 1055 South Grady Way, and is accessible from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The kiosk accepts bottles up to 6 inches in diameter and 12 inches tall. It does not accept medical waste and is tamper-proof.

This free service is coordinated by King County as part of their secure medicine return program https://kingcountysecuremedicinereturn.org.
