Everything is big about Wyman Dobson’s showpiece garden in Renton

Most corn stalks reach seven or eight feet tall. In Wyman Dobson’s Renton garden, the metal rods that hold up his corn are eight feet. At 14 feet, his corn stalks are nearly twice that height. Each cob splits into three big pieces for corn on the cob.

FOOD AND WINE: Spicy chicken takes thought, a lighter white

Often when people ask me what to pair with what they are having for dinner, they name the main meat of the meal – and not how it is prepared or what spices or sauces may be used. Pairing a wine with a meat can be quite simple; pairing it to a recipe can be a bit more difficult. Chicken would have a list of wines that can go with it, but add a spicy recipe to the mix and you have a whole different list of wines. I would normally pair Riesling with spicy Asian foods, sauvignon blanc with spicy Mexican foods. But spicy chicken? That took some thought. In the end I felt that this meal required a lighter white, but not as light as the ones above, to hold up the chicken dish, and found Viognier to be a fantastic match!

Green Halloween? Earth-friendly movement hits holiday

Corey Colwell-Lipson knew Halloween would turn green. She just didn’t expect the holiday to change colors so quickly.

Renton (and loaf of bread) star in FilmFrenzy

The loaf of white bread started in Greenfresh Market and ended in a kitchen in downtown Renton. Along the way the loaf visited a donkey statue, the Piazza, an Australian shepherd and many downtown Renton neighborhoods.

Moviegoers file into the new Regal Cinemas Stadium 14 The Landing Stadium 14; the grand opening was Friday.

The Regal has landed in Renton

Alaina St. Clair lives in Renton. But she doesn’t go to movies in Renton. She calls the city’s theaters old and “kind of nasty.” She and her daughter Chanel, 4, made an exception Wednesday. Instead of catching a movie at their usual spot, downtown Seattle’s ritzy Pacific Place shopping mall, the pair headed to the new Regal Cinemas at The Landing, officially called Regal Cinemas The Landing Stadium 14.

PORK LOIN CHEF: Alyssa Paredes

I moved to the Renton area from El Paso, Texas, two years ago. I’ve always had a passion for great cooking; and after I found out that Renton Technical College had a great Culinary Arts program, I pretty much jumped for the opportunity. This is my second quarter and I love it. My goals after graduation are to become a certified culinarian from the American Culinary Federation and, long-term, own my own restaurant.

RENTON FOOD AND WINE: Fruity wine works best with this pork

Autumn has arrived and it is the perfect season for Spiced Rubbed Pork Loin. Pork loin is one of the leanest cuts of meat and pairs perfectly with white wines, especially Gewürztraminer (pronounced geh-vertz-tra-mihner). Pork loin needs a wine that is low in tannins and mild in flavor ao as to not overpower the flavor of the pork. If the pork is made with fruit, then a soft and fruity wine works best.
