As part of their commitment to education, and to celebrate teachers in the Renton School District, each month members of Rotary Club of Renton selects a few teachers as Teacher of the Month.
November’s Teachers of the Month are:
Stephanie Penney
Third grade Teacher at Cascade Elementary
Stephanie Penney attended Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah where she received a degree in elementary education with a minor in theatrical studies. She is currently working on a master’s in technology with Boise State University in Idaho. Penney began her teaching career at Monroe Elementary in West Valley City, Utah where she taught second grade for two years. She then moved to Boise, Idaho where she taught first and second grade for 14 years at Silver Sage Elementary. In addition to teaching, Penney owns a photography business and specializes in family and high school senior photography. Penney is in her second year with the Renton School District.
Heidi Schumacher
Primary EBD (Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities) Teacher at Talbot Hill Elementary School
Heidi Schumacher received her bachelor’s degree specializing in special and elementary education from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. She began her teaching experience at Montebello Elementary in Phoenix, Arizona where she taught first grade for one year. This is Schumacher’s second year with the Renton School District as an EBD Teacher.
Katie Horelick
Science Teacher at Lindbergh High School
Katie Horelick earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Gonzaga University in Spokane. She continued her education at Western Governors University where she obtained her Master’s of Education in instructional design. Horelick taught eighth grade science in the Federal Way School District for one year before coming to Renton. This is Horelick’s fifth year in Renton School District where she has taught ninth grade physical/earth science and biology.
As part of the recognition, teachers attend Rotary’s Teacher of the Month recognition luncheon held at the Maplewood Golf Course. Each teacher is introduced, makes a brief comment about the school and classroom, and receives $200 to be used for classroom supplies or instructional materials.
