Irish music festival to benefit The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Renton’s A Terrible Beauty Irish Pub and Restaurant is throwing a three-day Irish music festival in support of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society this weekend, starting today (Friday).

The festivities include Irish acts, local and from Portland and Vancouver B.C. There will be Irish dancers, bagpipes and drums among many other musical acts.

“I think that it’s a really good charity to give to,” said pub owner Jenna Shannon Garvey O’Brien. “Most of their proceeds go directly toward research and curing blood cancers, but they also help out families and children and people that are going through that.”

All of the money raised by A Terrible Beauty during the festival will go to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

They are throwing the Irish fest in conjunction with LLS’s The Big Climb, a race up 69 stairs of the Columbia Center in downtown Seattle. Two of A Terrible Beauty’s workers, Dermot Owens and Eamonn Davey, will be participating in the fundraiser on March 20.

Supporting charities is nothing new for the pub. Since the pub opened in 2009, Shannon Garvey O’Brien has made a public commitment to the community to give back.

“So we just wanted it to be a place that fostered good things,” she said. “I believe that when you do good things they just come back to you threefold and we’ve had such amazing support.”

It is also a personal commitment Shannon Garvey O’Brien made because she feels connected to medical research and children.

She has multiple sclerosis and one of her six children is a cancer survivor.

She said she wouldn’t be able to walk and lead a full life if it wasn’t for the dedication of science to research and donations.

“I just think everybody you know and meet is touched by something and I think that giving to charities if you can do that – if you can’t volunteer your time then you volunteer your place or your money or whatever you can,” she said. “It kinda makes the world go round, right.”
