Common Ground Cupcakes turns 3, enters Food Network challenge

A Renton cupcake shop will celebrate its third birthday this week with hopes for national fame.

A Food Network scout asked Common Ground Cupcakes bakers Crystal Roberts and owner Heng Woon to apply for its Cupcake Wars competition.

While the network hasn’t selected its competitors yet, the downtown staple hopes to fill one of the four spots.

“I just want to know how they found out about us,” Roberts said.

The prize includes $10,000 and the opportunity to cater an event in Hollywood, she said.

An entry video on YouTube shows Roberts skating down an alley with a cupcake, red hair and sporting a tongue ring. Watch it on RentonReporter.com.

If accepted, Woon would participate as Roberts’ assistant.

“Renton is awesome,” Roberts said. “We need more people to come down and see how cool it is.”

Creativity runs high at the little cupcake shop. Roberts designs a new cupcake for every season and celebration.

A St. Patrick’s cake is made with Guinness beer and topped with a crown of rainbow sprinkles swirling around a center of gold.

“We have a lot of fun doing it and we love what we do,” Roberts said.

For its anniversary celebration, the shop plans to have free face painting, balloons and a mini cupcake with each beverage purchase March 13.

Live music starts at 4 p.m., and the colorful corner store plans to sport new artwork.

A raffle will raise money for the Renton Salvation Army.
