Renton: Home for holidays

Having just returned from an evening stroll amongst the array of holiday lights at Coulon Park, it occurred to me how much holiday cheer there is right here in Renton.

In tough economic times such as these, it is really nice be able to stay close to home while enjoying the bounty of the holidays.

The Clam Lights at Coulon are an icon in Renton and are amusing to watch as they stroll along next to the infamous “Interface” sculpture of walkers. Thousands of lights illuminate the walkway and reflect an array of color on top of the water. How wonderful to watch them all go on at once, turning a dark night into a radiant evening! If you are lucky, you might catch a flotilla of decorated boats parading by.

The Landing, sporting a 40-foot tree amidst a sea of brilliant lights, was the first area in Renton to ring in the holiday season with a Reindeer Games and Lighting Ceremony. People of all ages enjoyed the festive atmosphere, the live music and the real reindeer!

Downtown Renton glitters in the Piazza while storefronts are dressed in holiday wrappings. There was even a celebratory lighting of the area complete with Santa and his charming house, carolers and refreshments!

In addition to these holiday venues, Renton offers us the distinctive experience of “The Nutcracker.” Our own Evergreen City Ballet put on a dazzling rendition of the much loved holiday performance at the IKEA Performing Arts Center. From the lavish costumes to the dramatic yet amusing battle scene to the enchanting Kingdom of Snow; the magic of the show was mesmerizing. Dancers captivated the audience immediately with their proficient precision, grace and flair. All the children, many from Renton, were delightful to watch as they showcased their talents on stage, and the resonance of the familiar music embraced the essence of the holiday. Families came dressed in holiday attire posing for pictures by the fireplace. Parents, who were extras in the show, sang carols in the lobby during intermission.

The holidays are definitely prevalent in Renton! How fortunate we are to live in an area that offers so many goings-on and adornments this time of year. Next year I think I’ll be staying home for the holidays as well!!
