Police acted with care, good judgment

I watched an incident with the Renton Police Department play out in my own front yard. They couldn’t have been more professional, obviously considered the suspect and managed the crime scene in record time.

It was about 8 p.m., dark outside, I was in my living room watching TV with my brother who was visiting from out of town. We heard sirens and screeching tires and saw lots of blue and red flashing lights. Police cars were everywhere.

Several of the police cars were chasing an older sedan north down the block. Police cars coming south intercepted him. He turned around trying to head south but two police cars boxed him in. The suspect was backing up, going forward, backing up, going forward to no avail, hitting the police cars. He damaged his car and both police cars.

It seemed to us that at that moment the police could have drawn their guns and fired. But instead they pulled him out of the car, put him on the ground and handcuffed him. We were so impressed. This scene could have played out very differently.

I have lived in Renton for 40 years so, of course, I’ve had dealings with the Police Department and witnessed other incidents. I feel safe and am confident our Police Department is here to serve our community with care and good judgment.
