The location of the Renton Public Library is of vital importance to our many citizens. They should be congratulated for their involvement in planning. It appears that the mayor and several Renton City Council members are the main promoters of a location which most see as inappropriate.
Recently, an excellent suggestion was made to me by a knowledgeable citizen. That is, to let the Chamber of Commerce take over the central Renton location that has been suggested for the library. This would permit the chamber to be next to the Pavilion, the parking garage, the Farmers Market, IKEA, the transit center and local businesses. The chamber then could easily promote Renton events, and request police presence, if necessary. Interested new businesses would see the chamber involved in the establishment of a strong business center, not as part of the airport or South Seattle, as it now appears.
If the property seemed to be too large and expensive at first, art and musical events could be promoted in available space.
It would seem wise to preserve the library in its present location. The setting is beautiful, and unlike any other that I know of. Let’s fix it, and use it, for individuals and families, in its present invaluable location.
