According to the Renton Reporter staff’s recap of 2009, the highlight of January was a ho-hum weather report. How could they have missed the event of the century, the unprecedented inauguration of Barack Hussein Obama, later to become the Nobel Peace Prize recipient, and the first African- American president in the history of America, of which Renton is a part.
Likewise January 2010 will have the same bleak outcome since the Renton Reporter staff failed to note another monumental event last month which was the anniversary of an incomparable African-American man whose legacy is so powerful that a holiday is named in his honor, as well as the county in which we live, also a Nobel Peach Prize recipient, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. of which Renton is a part.
The Renton city mayor and council members, elected officials seated on the bench, were equally remiss in honoring and promoting the legacy of Dr. King in a city that cannot afford to let the Dream die.
Across the nation these two great men, past and present, were celebrated for their unparalleled accomplishments and contributions to the world. What’s up with Renton?
