There’s no opening date yet, but WinCo Foods, a grocery store known for having generally lower-priced goods than other stores, shared that a Renton location is coming and released some behind-the-scenes photos.

WinCo Foods announced in a Jan. 28 social media post that its Renton location is under construction. There is no estimated opening date yet, but it said to stay tuned to its social media for updates on the Renton location’s construction progress.

According to WinCo, the employee-owned location will be at 800 Garden Ave. N. This location was formerly a Fry’s Electronics.

According to the King County Department of Assessments, WinCo Foods bought the property on May 6, 2024, for $24 million from Dash 80 Property Owner LLC. Before Dash 80 Property Owner LLC owned the property, it bought it from Boeing for $15.2 million on Nov. 17, 2000.

The building that will house WinCo was built in 2002, and its gross square footage is 151,840, according to county property records. The total square footage of the land where the WinCo will be is 501,611. In 2025, the land was valued at $22.1 million.

The most recent permit issued to WinCo Foods was on May 22, 2025, with a value of $18.5 million. The type was for a remodel. The description says it was for interior and exterior changes to the existing building, with the addition of a compactor dock.

According to WinCo, its stores are employee-owned, meaning employees participate in an Employee Stock Ownership Plan that makes them part owners of the company and provides financial benefits when the company performs well.

“In this way, there is direct incentive for employees to work hard and take pride in what they do; that is why our stores are cleaner, our prices lower and our smiles are bigger,” according to WinCo. “Additionally, being employee-owned means WinCo Foods is owned by members of the local community.“

Boise, Idaho-based WinCo has locations in 10 states and about two dozen stores in Washington, including Kent, about 7 miles from the future Renton store.
