Russian state company buys 50 737s, valued at $3.7 billion

A Russian state-owned company will buy 50 737s in a deal worth $3.7 million, Boeing and the company announced Friday.

The deal comes with the right to buy 35 more Next-Generation 737s, built in Renton.

The 737 continues its reign as Boeing’s best-selling airplane ever. The company this week announced that it would increase production of 737s to 38 in 2012 to meet worldwide demand.

There is a backlog of about unfilled 2,000 orders for 737s. Three hundred 737s have been ordered this year alone, nearly 95 percent of the total Boeing orders.

The Russian state company, State Corporation Rostechnologii, will lease the airplanes to Russian airlines.

“Rostechnologii’s Boeing Next-Generation 737 order represents a substantial investment in our future and will enhance the significant progress we are making in improving the global competitiveness of our airline industry,” said Sergey Chemezov, chief executive officer of Rostechnologii, in a press release.

Over the past 20 years, Boeing’s joint programs in Russia have resulted in almost $6 billion in global projects making Boeing Russia’s largest international aerospace investor, according to the press release.
