Darren’s Speakeasy is a Xillennial getaway

Renton’s newest bar offers pop culture nostalgia off of Tobin Street.

Darren Singh now owns Renton’s best-kept secret: a speakeasy bar that feels like a blast from the Gen-X and Millennial past, from the death of disco to Y2K.

Located off Tobin Street, the bar has been open since June and celebrated its official ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 17 with Singh’s family, friends, the Renton Chamber of Commerce and local leaders.

“It has always been a dream,” Singh said of opening the speakeasy. “I love music, movies and art. I love hosting and having events.”

Singh’s love for entertainment and pop culture are evident throughout the venue, with one wall decorated with photos of some of the hottest musical acts of the last 20 years, a wall decorated with iconic vinyl record covers and VHS covers, a wall of sports and entertainment memorabilia and autographs, a wall of ‘80s and ‘90s video game controllers, and a spray paint graffiti-art banner complete with Scrooge McDuck.

Open from 5 p.m. to midnight, Darren’s is designed to be a welcome spot for the “Xillennial” demographic (defined as a “micro-generation of people on the cusp of the Generation X and Millennial demographic cohorts”), with different events for most evenings. Mondays are LGBTQIA+ Pride Night, Tuesdays are Nerd Night, Wednesdays are Wine Night, Fridays are ‘80s Night and Saturdays are ‘90s Night.
