The City of Renton is extending the hours of a cold-weather shelter to include Wednesday night, Jan. 18.

The shelter in downtown Renton already was scheduled to open Monday and on Tuesday.

Because of the expected overnight low temperatures and the possibility of heavy snow, the shelter will be open to provide support to those in need.

About 24 people signed in to the shelter Monday, according to Preeti Shridhar, communications director for the City of Renton.

In the past, city shelters have seen more visitors on the second day of operations, Shridhar said.

The city expects more people to use the shelter Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

The shelter is located at at the Harambee Church, 316 S. Third St,. in Renton. It will be open from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. both days.

The church will provide separate areas for men and women and families.

The shelter will be operated by Catholic Community Services staff, volunteers from Harambee Church and the Renton community.

The city stresses that the shelter is confidential, allows walk-ins and food is provided.

The City of Renton offers the following tips for dealing with cold weather:

• Residents are asked to be careful and remain in their homes for their own safety.

• To stay warm, wear extra clothing and use extra blankets.

• Dress appropriately before going outdoors. The air temperature does not have to be below freezing for someone to experience cold emergencies such as hypothermia and frostbite.

• Make sure to keep your gas tank near full to avoid ice in the tank and fuel lines. Keep extra blankets in the trunk in the event that you are stranded and have to wait for help.

• Prevent water pipes from freezing and thaw them if they do freeze.

• Stock your emergency car kit, especially with a battery operated radio, water, blankets and non-perishable foods.
