Evergreen 'outworks' Hazen soccer, teams draw 1-1

After getting draws against the top two teams in Seamount in their last two games, Hazen Soccer played to another 1-1 draw against Evergreen on Friday.

The Highlanders got a goal at the 24-minute mark from forward Ricky Aguirre off an assist by midfielder Jorman Gonzalez.

But less than a minute later, Evergreen tied the score on a 35 yard prayer that found the net.

The game was the good news-bad news story for Hazen Coach Ken Matthews.

“The positive I can take away from this game is that we had at least two 95s and four 75s,” he said in a press release, explaining that "95s" are where a player receives a pass, is looking at an empty net, and makes the goal 95 percent of the time while 75s are one-on-one breakaways or where there’s a ball free in the box and you’d expect 75 percent of those shots to score.

Hazen got nothing from those opportunities.

Statistically, it would appear Hazen had control of the game; they had six corners to two and 14 shots to three for Evergreen. But, the team was outworked by Evergreen for 78 minutes, according to the coach.

“One thing we try to instill in our teams is the expectancy to outwork the opponent by playing the entire game at a high level with consistency. Until the clock went to 2:00 minutes in the second half we had no urgency,” Matthews added.

Then there was the offside situation.

“We had 15 offsides. That just killed everything for us. It has been that

way for us all season. There are some good offsides when you’re trying to pressure the defense into mistakes, but that wasn’t the case last night,” said Matthews. “Instead of adjusting we decided to argue with the referees and our teammates.

“On top of everything else, we had a bit of a mental meltdown. It’s been building up over the last few games. It will be addressed,” Matthews ended.

The Highlanders are now 4-2-4 overall with a 3-1-4 record in the Seamount.

Hazen plays Renton at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Renton Memorial Stadium.
