The 27-member Hazen High School drill team placed first in the 3A pom and third in 3A military categories March 29 at the state tournament in Yakima.

The team competed against 11 other teams in the military and 10 other teams in pom.

Christine Ta, a senior co-captain, also received a $400 scholarship from the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association.

Senior Josie Fenske finished sixth in the individual 3A drill down out of hundreds of participants.

The teams compete in six dance categories: military, pom, dance, hip hop, kick and show.

In pom, the emphasis is on the visual impacts of the poms and military emphasizes precision.

In theĀ  drill down the participant is given a series of many commands that must be executed

State is the highest level of competition for state dance and drill teams.

The team is coached by Kristin Sargent.
