John Charlton pleads guilty to murdering Ingrid Lyne

The Renton woman’s body parts were found in a recycling bin last year.

John Robert Charlton pleaded guilty to the charge of first-degree murder of Renton resident Ingrid Lyne.

Charlton, 38, initially pleaded not guilty at his arraignment, but changed his plea Monday morning, according to a King County Prosecutor’s Office press release. He also pleaded guilty to a charge of theft of motor vehicle, for stealing Lyne’s car.

“Our community was shocked by the senseless murder of Ingrid Lyne,” said King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg in the release. “We have charged the most serious crimes we could under the law, and now that this defendant has pled guilty, we will be recommending the maximum prison sentence.”

Lyne was reported missing April 2016. Later the same day, Lyne’s partial body remains were found in a recycling bin in Seattle’s Central District. The county medical examiner reported she died of homicidal violence.

Charlton and Lyne reportedly met on an online dating service. Charlton allegedly spent the night at Lyne’s house in the Highlands the day before she was reported missing. Police found Charlton at his former girlfriend’s house in Snohomish and arrested him.

His bail was originally set at $2 million at his first court appearance, but prosecutors asked the judge to increase it to $5 million.

Charlton faces a sentence range of 20 to 30 years in prison. King County Prosecutors will be recommending a top of the range sentence of 30 years according to the release.

He is scheduled for sentencing for Jan. 5, 2018.
