A 23-year-old Renton man was shot and killed by a Pierce County sheriff's deputy after he attempted to run the deputy over with his car Saturday.

Ion Ungureanu's car veered off the road and struck a tree at Lake Tapps; he died at the scene, according to The News Tribune.

Autopsy results haven't been released.

The deputy was responding to a call from a resident who heard someone breaking into her garage, according to the Tribune.

A 25-year-old passenger was also taken to Tacoma General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and a third man escaped on foot.

The suspects used a torch to open a safe in the garage.
