Homeless man killed in the Renton Highlands Sunday

A homeless man has been arrested for investigation of murder in the bludgeoning death Sunday morning of another homeless man behind a business in the Highlands.

The victim, a 52-year-old Renton man, was found at about 8 a.m. unconscious and bleeding in an alcove of a closed business in the 2800 block of Northeast Sunset Boulevard, according to the Renton Police Department.

He died there, suffering a blunt forceful blow to his head.

Witnesses alerted officers to another homeless man who has been sleeping in the nearby area. He was found in a store nearby and after an investigation, he was arrested.

Officers recovered a hammer believed to be connected to the homicide a short distance from where he was arrested.

The suspect initially gave officers an incorrect birthdate and name, which was discovered when he was fingerprinted at the King County Jail, according to Detective Robert Onishi, a spokesman for the Police Department.

He is a 48-year-old Renton man and has an arrest record.

The Police Department indicated that detectives are not actively looking for other suspects.

Anyone who directly witnessed the crime is asked to contact the Renton Police Department at 425-430-7500 and refer to case No. 2014-6661.
