Renton volunteers assemble disaster kits for seniors
June 18, 2008 · Updated 1:54 PM
About 300 emergency preparedness kits were assembled last Thursday by about 140 volunteers at an event sponsored by the Highlands Community Association.
The kits will go to senior citizens and the disabled in Renton so they have a better chance of surviving an disaster or other emergency.
The original goal was to assemble about 200 kits.
“It was a really big success,” said Sandel DeMastus, a member of the association's board.
The effort drew a number of city officials, including Fire Chief I. David Daniels, Police Chief Kevin Milosevich and Deborah Needham, the city’s emergency management director.
Distribution of the kits has already begun, mostly through local churches. For more information about the distribution, contact Howard McOmber, the association’s vice president, at 206-679-6694, or Terry Persson, association president, at 425-228-5848.
“It was a great turnout,” said Person.
The assembling was done at the Highlands Neighborhood Center. The supplies were provided by private donations, local merchants and the association itself.
The kits include such items as flash lights, candles, first-aid kits, communications gear and emergency food.
