The wares at the Salvation Army Renton Rotary Food Bank grew by 64,000 pounds over the weekend.

That’s how much food was donated during Saturday’s annual National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Renton Salvation Army Captain Terry Masango was expecting more donations to come in after Saturday, hopefully bringing the total donations closer to the goal of 70,000 pounds of food.

“It went very well,” Masango said of Saturday’s drive. “We’re very, very happy. We’re very grateful to the community.”

More than 100 people helped Masango pick up, sort and stock the donations from 1-8 p.m. Saturday. Donations were left in specially marked bags outside mailboxes and taken to the three Renton post offices. Volunteers picked up the food from the post offices.

The donations will help satisfy the food bank’s demands over the summer. The food bank serves about 1,500 families each month, including 2,350 children. Masango says the number of families served has shot up over the last few months.
