Principal selected for reopened Honey Dew Elementary

The Renton School District has hired a new principal for Honey Dew Elementary, which is scheduled to reopen as a full kindergarten-through-fifth-grade school in the fall.

Shannon Harvey, the former principal at Cascade Elementary School, will be the new principal at Honey Dew, when the school will open to more than 400 students.

Harvey is a former winner of the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award in 2008, when she was at Cascade Elementary.

"I will miss the Cascade community, but I know that Honey Dew Elementary provides an exciting opportunity to work with the Honey Dew community to create a school of excellence where students are able to grow academically and socially," Harvey said in a district press release.

With the opening of Honey Dew in September, located at 800 Union Avenue Northeast in Renton, comes boundary changes for eight other elementary schools.

Those schools affected by the boundary changes are Bryn Mawr, Campbell Hill, Hazelwood, Highlands, Kennydale, Lakeridge, Maplewood Heights and Sierra Heights.

Those are the only elementary schools with boundary changes in the district.

The changes were necessary to populate Honey Dew, accommodate enrollment growth throughout the district and alleviate overcrowding.
