State troopers stop 85 speeders on I-90, I-405 Saturday during holiday emphasis patrol

East King County state patrol troopers stopped 85 speeders in a two-hour period Saturday morning, enforcing the 60 mph speed limit on interstates 90 and 405, according to the Washington State Patrol.

One speeder returning from the Dave Matthews concert at the Gorge was stopped and ticketed twice, once by a trooper in Kittitas County and then by a King County trooper for driving 19 mph over the speed limit.

The Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC) recently launched its Slow Down or Pay Up campaign. The state patrol supports this campaign as part of reaching its goal of zero traffic fatalities in Washington state by the year 2030.

Driving under the influence, excessive speed, and failing to wear seatbelts are the leading causes of traffic fatalities. The WSP has extra patrols throughout the state targeting dangerous drivers.

The holiday weekend is not over and traffic volumes will rise on Monday as Labor Day travelers return from their weekend getaways, according to a state patrol press release.
