Sen. Joe Fain launched the “Canvas to Capitol” student art program three years ago where he asked South King County students to send original artwork to decorate the walls of his office in the state Capitol building. Last week first grader Jalen and his family made the trip to Fain’s Olympia office to deliver the most unique piece received to date from Mrs. Baker’s first grade class at Maplewood Heights Elementary School.

“There’s no better reminder for me and the others coming through my office of the incredible students back home in our community that we’re in the Legislature to serve,” said Fain. “Part of developing well-rounded students in our education system includes artistic expression and creativity. Thank you to all of the students and teachers who worked together to make something special.”

The piece titled “Spreading Our Wings in First Grade” was made using watercolor paper, sharpies, gel pens and colored pencils. The students created the piece in January after being inspired by international street artist Kelsey Montague’s “What Lifts You?” campaign.

Students and teachers each designed and decorated one or two of the feathers, which were then assembled into wings.

Jalen hand delivered the piece to Fain’s office along with his parents Helen and Quyen and brother Gabi.

The artwork is now proudly displayed in the Capitol building where visitors can pose with the photo and send them back to the class using the hashtag #bakersclass2018.
