Renton artist displaying marquetry at Carco

Art by Dennis Harrison will be exhibited at Carco Theatre through Feb. 13.
Harrison of Renton is a marquetry artist. Hundreds of years old, marquetry is an art form that uses only natural and dyed wood veneers. Although the art is practiced extensively in the United Kingdom and Europe, it is dying out in America. To help promote the art, Harrison recently helped start the Puget Sound chapter of the American Marquetry Society.
Harrison has shown his art locally for many years and his pieces have been included in juried shows.
His recent work was taken from photographs he took at Aki Matsuri, a Japanese cultural festival in Bellevue. In an artist statement, Harrison writes that he has “challenged myself to capture in wood some of the spirit the Japanese people have shown in their unique flower arrangements.”
Carco Theatre is at 1717 Maple Valley Highway, 425-430-6706. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
