Two elementary schools receive academic award

Bryn Mawr and Cascade elementary schools have been selected to receive the Washington state Title I Academic Achievement Award for academic improvement and narrowing the achievement gap between ethnic-minority and white students.

The award is given to schools that are part of the federal Title I program, aimed at raising the achievement of low-income students.

Bryn Mawr and Cascade met test-score goals and other criteria outlined in the federal No Child Left Behind Act and measured by the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) for two consecutive years.

The schools will each receive a cash award of $3,500 to fund continued improvement in student instruction in reading, writing and math.

The Title I Academic Achievement Awards recognize schools that are demonstrating success in ensuring that all students are making significant progress toward proficiency on Washington’s academic content standards. These schools also provide support and serve as models for other schools.

Other award criteria include:

• Opportunities provided for all students to achieve.

• Use of research-based instructional strategies.

• Implementation of sustained research-based professional development.

• Teaching and learning based on the approved state standards.

• Established partnerships with parents, families, and the community.
